ARTIST STATEMENT

My art lives in the space between structure and surrender. Through abstraction, I explore how creativity reflects the process of personal growth, learning when to plan, when to trust, and how to move between the two.

Painting is both a reflection and a release for me. I begin by exploring color intuitively, letting emotion guide the first strokes before choosing direction and tone with intention.

Each painting is an exploration of balance as a moving target. It is where order meets chaos, control meets trust, and intention meets openness. In that meeting point, I find growth not as a final state, but as an ongoing, evolving practice.

About Mayte

b. 1991 Mexico City, Mexico | Lives and works in McKinney, TX

Hi, I’m Mayte Alquicira, a Mexican-born mixed media artist based in Dallas/McKinney, Texas. My work explores the balance between structure and surrender through abstraction: a space where color, emotion, and movement meet to tell stories about growth and transformation.

Raised between Mexico City and Morelia, I developed an early fascination with color and the way it communicates emotion beyond words. After earning a Master’s in Arts & Management from the Rome Business School, I found myself deeply inspired by the women of Abstract Expressionism, especially Helen Frankenthaler, whose fearless approach to color and form continues to influence my practice.

My creative process begins with intuitive color exploration that evolves into intentional decisions. I layer acrylics (heavy body, fluid and diluted), inks, oil sticks, pastels and fabric on canvas, and recently exploring adding hand stitching as a quiet homage to my mother’s craft. Each piece becomes a dialogue between control and release. An ongoing study of patience, awareness, and the art of letting go.

Alongside painting, I practice yoga, which has taught me that balance is not a fixed point but a moving state of calibration. Both disciplines challenge me to coexist with dualities: planning and trust, focus and flow, precision and freedom.

Through my art, I hope to evoke energy, curiosity, and expansion. The feeling that growth is never linear but always alive, shifting, and worth exploring.

I have had the pleasure to have my work exhibited internationally in Spain, Italy, Mexico, and the United States, and featured in Condé Nast’s House & Garden, Voyage Dallas, and several creative podcasts that celebrate artists in transformation.
